Some players may prefer to keep the index finger outside of the glove. However, if you pay close attention to the way professional baseball players have been doing it, you may wish to reconsider the way you go about encouraging younger players to wear their glove.
Look closely and you’ll notice that many pros will leave the palm of their hand outside of the glove, including both pitchers and catchers. With that in mind, you may be wondering about what advantages this may have. For one, it can make the glove hinge easier and it can better serve as an extension of the fingers. Further, wearing the glove with the palm exposed results in an air pocket that can reduce the chances of being “stung” by catching a fastball.
To wear the glove in this way, the pinky and ring finger would both placed in the slot meant for the pinky. The middle finger would go into the slot meant for the ring finger while the index finger would go into the middle finger slot.
